First Visit

Initial Exam

At this appointment of about 45 minutes, a panographic radiograph will be taken and Dr. McDermott will evaluate your teeth and bite. He will explain and answer any questions you may have about future treatment needs and options. Sometimes it may be recommended to delay treatment until a more appropriate time. If it is determined that treatment can start soon, the next step would be to set up an appointment for diagnostic records.

Diagnostic Records

Taking about 30 minutes, this appointment involves doing impressions of the teeth, photographs of the teeth and face and further radiographs. The records obtained will allow Dr. McDermott to fully diagnose your particular orthodontic problem and accurately determine treatment options. Many times, separators can also be placed at this appointment, which will allow for placement of braces the following appointment.

Placement of Appliances

Seven to 14 days after you have separators placed, Dr. McDermott will place the appropriate appliances. This usually takes 1½ - 2 hours, depending on the number of braces placed. Many times, upper braces may need to be worn for a few months prior to having the lower braces placed so as to avoid any bite interference with the lower braces. After the appliances are placed, you will be given complete instructions on care, food and emergencies. If you have any questions, please call the office and we will be happy to help you.
